Productive digitisation from A to "ZED"

Zeutschel is expanding ZED server, its software platform

Zeutschel is underlining its commitment as a full-range provider for digitisation solutions in the archive, library, museum and office environment with new and innovative software tools. The modules presented now seamlessly integrate into "ZED server", the software platform developed by Zeutschel. So, processes for the open-source digitisation software Goobi.production can be conveniently generated by means of the zedProcessCreator. zedExporter supports image conversion and creates derivates for presentation and, in addition, the module acts as an interface with MyBib eL, the electronic reading room from Imageware. zedOCR ensures different OCR engines and OCR services can be used and zedControl is ZED server's new control centre. The new modules are available now.

Tübingen, February 2014
Thanks to ZED server, Zeutschel's integrated software platform, operators of digitisation systems have at their disposal a highly functional set of software tools to cover a wide variety of different tasks. ZED server's modules can be used in virtually any digitisation environment. This allows seamless integration of Goobi, the open source digitisation solution.

"The software concept for ZED server is a modular, web-based one, giving users a high degree of flexibility by allowing them to optimally adapt their architectures to project-specific conditions", says Frank-Ulrich Weber, Project Manager Workflow Solutions with the digitisation specialists in Tübingen. ZED server will be offered as a complete package, whereby the customer has the option to decide for himself which and when each of the integrated software modules should be released by means of a licensing key.

Powerful "tool box"

The range of integrated software tools has now been expanded by four new modules:

zedProcessCreator – zedProcessCreator is able to automatically generate Goobi processes by means of ID lists. The metadata needed is retrieved from the configured catalogue system directly. The Uniform Resource Names (URNs) for mandatory submission to the German National Library (DNB) can also be created with this module.

zedExporter - zedExporter generates the image derivatives (JPEGs) for display in the presentation interface 'Goobi.presentation' or in the viewer of the German Research Foundation (DFG). When using the electronic reading room (MyBib eL) by the Imageware company, the module fulfils another important function. It processes copyrighted databases in such a way that they can only be used in accordance with the law. This includes access only being allowed by registered users on the premises of the respective library; it additionally prevents data from being stored or copies from being made.

zedOCR - zedOCR module manages interfaces with Optical Character Recognition (OCR) engines and services such as the Abbyy Recognition Server, tesseract, or I.R.I.S, as well as OCR services such as Head Office of the Common Library Association GBV (VZG) and OCR jobs.

zedControl - zedControl is ZED server's control centre. Access to all partial functions takes place under a standard user interface.

Existing modules are:

zedInterface - The zedInterface module is an interface for the standardised Z39.50 network protocol which is standard use for querying bibliography information systems in library management. When tasks are created on digitisation platforms such as Goobi.production, the module can request and import metadata from various catalogue systems.

zedOSGo! - The interface module zedOSGo! controls data transfer between the Capturing Software Omniscan (OS12) developed by Zeutschel and Goobi.production, capturing structural data such as chapter or paragraph information during the scanning process. This information can be further augmented by means of a metadata editor or directly exported to presentation interfaces such as Goobi.presentation in formats such as the Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS) or the Metadata Encoding & Transmission Standard (METS).

Creating added value with modules

"ZED server is the key element in transforming a flexible workflow software such as Goobi into a customisable system solution for digitisation projects. In addition, separate Zeutschel software solutions can be integrated into ZED server effectively, for example, the Capturing Software Omniscan OS 12 or the delivery service Hermes Digital", says Michael Luetgen, Sales Manager Software Solutions at Zeutschel, referring to the successful reference installations such as those at the University Library of Mittweida.
