Zeutschel Supports Creation of the Hesse Cabinet in Tübingen

A section of the premises in the Antiquariate Heckenhauer – one of the oldest bookshops in Germany and close to the Collegiate Church in Tübingen – has been equipped to house the small cabinet. Hermann Hesse finished his apprenticeship as a bookseller at Heckenhauer's between 1895 and 1899.
For Managing Director, Jörg Vogler, the cultural sponsorship is part of the corporate philosophy: "Whether it is with our scanning and microfilm systems or as a patron for cultural projects: Zeutschel plays a role in securing the 'future of the past'."

He is pleased that the city council is planning to put a greater emphasis on showcasing the city of books and as a business company firmly rooted in the community, he feels they themselves have a degree of responsibility: "We are pleased when we can help create places with such an intense focus on literature and books."

"We're delighted to have won the Zeutschel company as a partner for this project", says Daniela Rathe, Head of the Culture Department at the University City of Tübingen. "The Hesse Cabinet is an important memorial site for Tübingen. Hermann Hesse achieved international renown as a writer and a crucial phase of his life along this journey was spent here but the memorial goes beyond this. In point of fact, the Hesse Cabinet is an example of the literary heritage and the spirit of bookselling."

The Hesse Cabinet contains an exhibition of documents and reproductions, providing a glimpse into the life and work of Hermann Hesse. The centrepiece is the listed, cast-iron spiral staircase from Hesse's time and the two original bookcases filled with old volumes. Besides books, there are also plaques with quotes from or about the poet and five illuminated display cases which can be filled with changing exhibits. The Hesse Cabinet is open to visitors always from Friday to Sunday from 2 pm to 5 pm with free admission.
